Investigation launched into police Black Hawk incident at public picnic

The local prosecutor's office in Ciechanów has launched an investigation into an incident involving a police Black Hawk helicopter, which brought down a power line during a public picnic on Sunday in Sarnowa Góra. The police said it has notified the prosecutor and the State Commission on Aircraft Accidents Investigation.

Nearly 200-year-old time capsule found in West Point's Kosciuszko monument

A time capsule has been discovered inside the base of the Tadeusz Kościuszko's monument at U.S. Military Academy at West Point. A led container was found during recent renovation works. "Academy officials determined the capsule was placed in the base of the Kosciuszko monument 26 years after the academy’s founding by cadets in 1828," West Point said in a statement. The academy will open and unveil the capsule at a ceremony on August 28.

The 80th anniversary of Białystok Ghetto Uprising

The 80th anniversary of Białystok Ghetto Uprising. This insurgency of Jewish people is considered the second-largest in history, surpassed only by the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The main fighting took place on August 16, 1943. The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken send his address marking Wednesday's commemoration ceremony. Blinken's stepfather, Samuel Pisar, was a Białystok Ghetto survivor. The observances were attended by another ghetto survivor Benjamin Midler, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski, Ambassador of Israel to Poland Yacov Livne as well as local authorities.

We're definitely planning to take this case to court and demand the truth there - Radio Zet Editor-In-Chief Mateusz Smolarek told TVN24 on Wednesday (August 16). He was referring to a fine imposed on his station by Poland's National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) Chairman Maciej Świrski. One of the KRRiT members, Prof. Tadeusz Kowalski of the University of Warsaw, told TVN24 the chairman had not discussed his decision with the remaining four Council members.

The ambassador then pointed at the state-of-the-art military equipment that was at display during the army parade and picnic, including Abrams tanks and F35 fighter jets. Reporters Without Border (RSF) have responded to the criticism from Poland's Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. The organization accused the minister of trying to meddle in the content-making decisions of private media. "Asking the media authority to sanction TVN and TVN24 for what they did not broadcast is clearly a politically motivated and legally unfounded attempt on their editorial decisions," the RSF said.

The Polish government wants to pose questions to voters during the October 15 parliamentary election that will include whether Poland should take in "thousands of illegal immigrants", a move rivals say aims to swing the vote by misleading voters about opposition policies. According to the National Electoral Commission, participation in the referendum is entirely up to each voter, just like when it comes to taking part in the election.

MOD chief signs contracts on new vehicles for Polish Armed Forces

The Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak on Monday (August 14) signed three agreements with Polish Armament Group (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa - PGZ) on the delivery of new equipment for the Polish Armed Forces. "They pertain to heavy infantry fighting vehicles, a new version of wheeled armoured personnel carriers, and light reconnaissance vehicles," the MOD chief said.
